For years, counselors and therapists have talked about the inner child. It sounded like psycho-talk to me, even after all my years in this field. Talk to them, hold a stuffed animal, say affirmations, write them a letter... I wondered what real difference it could make. That was then; this is now.
I'm wiser and older now, and I see it differently. Everything is connected. Time itself is interconnected. What happened twenty years ago is still relevant today if it hasn't been integrated.
Inner Child Awareness
Do you have inner children? You do.
It can be confusing to think that we hold so many different voices and scenarios inside of us. In the 90's, I worked with people who carried the dissociative identity disorder diagnosis, formerly known as multiple personality disorder. They presented with many different inner selves, often several child parts. Everyone was excited, fearful, and enthralled by how this could be. It captured our attention in movies, books, and plays.
Fast forward, and it turns out we all have multiple parts to us. We play so many roles in our lives: father, partner, daughter, teacher, lawyer, light worker, journalist, and more. Add to that the past experiences from this lifetime where you didn't get what you needed, and you got stuck there.
Here's an example. You were in third grade, and your teacher shamed you for not having the answer quickly enough. You were sent to the principal's office.
Fast forward to today. You're in a job interview, and you can't remember the answer to a question. The past and the present intersect, and you get stuck in the past. You walk away from the interview berating yourself for not being good enough, when really, it was an unresolved memory surfacing.
Interesting, right? This didn't happen every time, which makes it clearer to see: that third-grade memory is an inner child.
This matters because these memories can prevent us from being our best selves. It gets especially confusing when your real, living child doesn't answer a question quickly enough, and suddenly the past, present, and future collide.
It's possible to talk to these parts and hear what they have to say. Often, they hold important information, and once they're integrated into your present life, everything changes. If you're interested in doing this work, it can create huge timeline jumps in your life.
